A main attraction in the West End is the Royal Navy Dockyard. The Dockyard was established by the British in 1809, and it was built by forced labour (African slaves and English convicts). It was established to secure a operational base along the east coast of the original thirteen colonies. During WW1 and WW2 the base was critical for the Atlantic convoys as a launch base and repair station. It remained fully functional until 1951.
